ice

The word "ice" may conjure up images of a white rapper singing "Ice, Ice, Baby." Or it may make you think of an ice skating rink or a hockey rink where hockey players employ either "skate and stick" finesse or "bump and grind" brutality to win a contest. Or, perhaps it just makes you think of something you put in your lemonade on a hot summer day while you are out sitting in your porch swing.

The lyrics to a famous song croon, "She’s as cold as ice..." Well, in this instance that is certainly not a compliment to whomever that song is about. In modern nomenclature, if someone is "cold as ice" it means they are cold or frigid in temperament. It is the exact opposite of someone with brooding, smoldering sexuality, if you will.

Back in the days of the Chinese Emperors, the emperor would send a runner up to the mountains to get ice and bring it down to make ice cream for him and his friends to enjoy. As legend has it, if the runner came back and the ice had melted, the runner was killed on the spot. So speed and agility were the two pistons of any successful runner's character.
