Windows Internet Explorer is commonly abbreviated and referred to as IE on the Internet. The web browser, which has previously also been known as Microsoft Internet Explorer or MSIE, is included in the Windows 7 operating system, Windows Server 2008 R2 and previous Microsoft operating systems.

Users who run previous Microsoft operating systems can upgrade their version to Internet Explorer 8 using Windows Update or by downloading the browser from the official Microsoft website.

A preview of Internet Explorer 9 was recently offered for download as a developer preview version with performance improvements and better web standards support.

The integration of Internet Explorer in Windows 7 has caused controversy in Europe where a browser ballot screen was introduced to provide operating system users with alternative browser downloads.
