The modern ease at which information and media is exchanged has led to an increase in the dynamic uses. When people hold subscriptions with companies that provide this service, they may switch over and view their chosen broadcast programs that would normally be distributed via television, over the internet. In its early stages, internet TV functioned as a content archive for dedicated fans to view episodes that had been aired in the past.

A variety of methods are used, including direct streaming from streaming giant Netflix, or using peer to peer file sharing. A recent addition to the options Canadians have, the company is offering a Netflix free trial coupon in an attempt to lure thrifty viewers into subscribing to their service. Netflix functions as a digital movie and television archive that can be accessed through the TV still, as well as online. It combines the internet archives with a video-on-demand feature.

Since then, the practice has been appropriated by many independent viewers. Peer-to-peer sharing usually involves a user directly downloading the media files onto their computer from source sharing sites such as The Pirate Bay or isohunt. While streaming sites have at least partial ownership of the media they are distributing, shared torrent files are uploaded by users and bipass any obligation to pay royalties to the people who had initially produced the media.

The overwhelming success has led to legal issues concerning websites' rights to distribute copyrighted material without paying for the right to do so. Isohunt has frequently been embroiled with legal battles over their content, with officials insisting that it is Isohunt's sole function to assist in peer to peer illegal sharing. Isohunt defends itself by saying that it isn't responsible for checking the files that users upload, and that if users steal intellectual property and redistribute it, Isohunt is not the party who is breaking any laws. Currently there is no practical method of prosecuting the villains of illegal file sharing. The defendants would number in the hundreds of thousands in the United States alone, and most of the users are minors. Over a third of all teens report using these illegal file sharing sites.
