Iodine is a chemical element. On the periodic table it is represented with the atomic number 53 and the symbol I.


Iodine is a relatively rare element in nature resulting in many deficiency issues among humans. This deficiency is the leading preventable cause of mental retardation.


Iodine is an essential element that enables the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones.

The thyroid is a gland commonly affected upon exposure to radiation. Since it cannot distinguish between stable iodine and radioactive iodine, it will absorb whichever is present.

Potassium iodine for radiation is a common prevention. When taken, it floods the thyroid with iodine, and as a result, prevents radioactive iodine from being absorbed by the thyroid.
