The iPad 3 is an upcoming tablet computer and the third installment of Apple's iPad series. The iPad counts among the most popular tablet computers in the world, having sold over 50 million units as of early 2012. The highly anticipated, new and improved version of the iPad is expected to sell over 10 million units during the first quarter of 2012 alone.

Apple recently confirmed the iPad 3 release date to be in early March, following the launch media event that is scheduled for March 7th in San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Apple did not provide any additional details on the technical specifications of the iPad 3, but mentioned that it will be "something you really have to see. And touch."

Nonetheless, the iPad 3 is expected to feature Apple's renowned Retina Display, previously used only for their smartphone line, as well as a significantly improved resolution of 2048-by-1536 pixels, which is twice as high as that of the iPad 2. As many customers who had expected the Retina Display to be integrated in the iPad 2 were disappointed when it didn't happen, some business analysts have speculated that Apple will be making it up to their fans with the series' third installment. Industry rumors also suggest that the new display panels are being manufactured by Sharp, who is currently also working on enhancing their LCD technologies. The gadget will likely come with a new processor and improved graphical processing unit, manufactured by Apple's long term business partner Samsung.

The iPad is highest selling tablet PC in the world, taking over 80% of the United States tablet computing market share in late 2011. During the fourth quarter of 2011 alone, Apple sold over 15 million iPads, generating a 9 billion dollar revenue and unquestionably dominating the market.
