iphone 4

iPhone 4 is the fourth smartphone produced by Apple Inc. It was followed by iPhone 4S, a further development of the model that adds new features upon what has proved to be a commercial success.

Like all smartphones, iPhone 4 combines usual mobile phone characteristics with functions typical for a PDA. It allows the user to make calls, send messages, connect and browse the internet when a connection is available, take pictures and videos, watch movies or pictures, chat, install and use additional software for various purposes. Through a built in feature, called by Apple "Face Time", this model also makes use of a frontal video camera to facilitate video calls.

The design of iPhone 4 breaks away from its well known predecessors, iPhone 3G and Iphone 3GS. The front and back panels are flatter and are made from a chemically treated glass that is theoretically more resistant to abrasion than previously used plastic surfaces. The two panels are separated by a band of stainless steel that also acts as an exterior antenna. This allowed the designers to reduce the size of the device to what was called by Steve Jobs "the thinnest smartphone on the planet". The overall dimensions are 110mm high, 59mm wide and 9.4mm thick.

iPhone 4 uses the same Apple operating system that is used for the iPad, the iPod Touch and previous iPhone versions, namely iOS. It features a multi-touch display which allows the user to control and operate the device by touching the appropriate icons on the screen with their fingers. The display is a 3.5 inch LED backlit liquid crystal one that boasts a 960×640 resolution. The manufacturing company has marketed it as "Retina Display", since at the distance of 305mm from the eyes, it offers 300 pixels per inch, which is the maximum level of detail beyond which the human eye cannot tell the difference in quality.

The phone features a back facing 5 megapixels camera for photos and a front facing VGA video camera for video calls and recording HD movies. It also contains a compass, gyroscope and accelerometer which allows for the detection and calculation of movement on x, y and z axes.
