iPhone 5 refers to an upcoming smartphone model, developed by the Apple corporation, which is expected to be released in September 2011. It is rumored that the new iPhone will contain an A5 processor, improved voice command system, an 8 megapixel camera (considerably better than the 5 megapixel camera included in the iPhone 4), a scratch and shock proof screen, and longer battery life, while it will also be thinner and lighter than its predecessor. It will run the iOS 5 operating system, which may feature photo-sharing and improved messaging. A recent rumor about the iPhone 5 mentions a larger, 4-inch screen.

The term iPhone describes to a line of smartphones designed and produced by Apple Inc. It spans 4 generations, with the latest being released in June 2010. The original iPhone was launched in the United States on January 29, 2007, and subsequently in Europe, and it included multi-band GSM with EDGE and GPRS. While it originally ran OS X software, Apple released 4 major updates for it, although the company currently no longer issues updates for this model. However, at the time of its release, the product sold incredibly fast, with initial stocks depleting within hours. The original iPhone sold over 6 million units and was considered the invention of the year in 2007 by Time magazine.

The second generation iPhone, namd the 3G, was introduced in June 2008, and it carried many similarities to its predecessor, including a 128 MB eDRAM memory unit and the same 2MP camera. It also lacked video recording features, which are widely appreciated in the latest model. Nonetheless, several important improvements, such as assisted GPS, 3G data, as well as multi-band UMTS/HSDPA helped make this product a market hit. It runs the Apple’s iOS operating system, also used on the iPod Touch, the iPad and several other Apple devices. Its most notable feature is the control via a multi-touch display. However, as of March 2011, this model no longer receives updates from Apple.

The third generation iPhone is the 3GS, which was released in June 2009 in the United States, and internationally in August 2009. This model counts several notable improvements over its predecessors, and one of the most anticipated features is its video capability. The 3GS comes with a high resolution camera, overall improved performance, voice control, as well as support for 7.2 Mbit/s HSDPA downloading. The 3GS also runs the multi-touch iOS operating system, which is employed on the iPad and the iPod Touch as well. Unlike previous models, the iPhone 3GS continues to receive updates from Apple.

The latest generation is the iPhone 4, and it is particularly appreciated for its videotelephony feature and its web and email access. Just like all of its predecessors and the majority of Apple devices, the iPhone 4 also runs the iOS operating system. Its Apple A4 processor and 512MB of eDRAM, and it is twice as powerful as its predecessor. Its LED backlit liquid crystal display, which was marketed as the "Retina Display", offers a 960×640 resolution for excellent quality images.
