iPods are portable media players developed by Apple Inc. and were first unveiled in 2001. iPods were introduced to replace the "big and clunky or small and useless" alternatives. Old portable CD players did not store any music, which was an inconvenience to users. The devices that had storage capabilities were often cumbersomely large and heavy, making transport uncomfortable. Ergonomically small devices did not contain much storage capacity, and users were limited to about a couple dozen songs or less.

iPods
were created with the intent of combining size and convenience with utility. The first generation iPods had high storage capacity, batteries lasted relatively long between charges, and their small, lightweight size granted easy transport.

First generation iPods were strictly music players. However, later generation iPods adapted to consumer demand by entering additional media streams. Innovations soon offered photo storage, video players, and gaming capability. Apple continues to advance iPod features, storage capacity, and size. It's easier now to find cheap iPods owing to production efficiencies as with most technological advances.
