jefferson airplane
Jefferson Airplane was a psychedelic rock band from San Francisco, who enjoyed their greatest success in the 1960s with hit singles like "Somebody To Love" and "White Rabbit," and on albums like Crown Of Creation and Volunteers. Back then, the Airplane were considered one of the two or three leading psychedelic, or "acid-rock" bands (most often with the Grateful Dead).
The classic lineup of Marty Balin, Grace Slick, Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, and Spencer Dryden made five classic albums from 1967 through 1969, before splintering off in a variety of directions during the seventies and eighties. For awhile, this meant carrying on the Jefferson Airplane name with a revolving door of musicians and lineups. Eventually, the Airplane would permanently split into two groups: the Kaukonen-Casady led Hot Tuna and the more commercially successful Jefferson Starship, led by Kantner and Slick (and occasionally also featuring Marty Balin).
Today, the Jefferson Airplane's legacy lives on through blogs like Craig "The Airplane Man" Fenton's Take me To A Circus Tent (which is also the title of Fenton's exhaustively researched book on this groundbreaking band).
