Katie Couric is a broadcast journalist, and one of the most recognizable and popular television news personalities.

Born January 7, 1957 in Arlington, Virginia she graduated from the University of Virginia in 1979 and became as a desk assistant at ABC News in Washington, D.C.  In 1980, Couric became an assignment editor, and for a short time a producer, at CNN. From 1984 through 1989 she worked at local affiliates, in Miami and Washington D.C. During that time, she won an Emmy and an Associated Press Award for her work. She joined NBC News in 1989, as national political correspondent, and became the permanent co-anchor of Today on April 5, 1991. Couric also did regular reports for Dateline NBC.

On September 5, 2006 she became the first solo female anchor of the weekday evening news on one of the three traditional U.S. broadcast networks. She currently serves as the anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News. CBS Evening News with Katie Couric was given the 2008 Edward R. Murrow Award for best newscast.

Katie Couric married John Paul Monahan in 1989, they had two daughters. After his death in 1998, due to colon cancer, she helped found the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance, (NCCRA).
