Kidney stones is the common name for renal lithiasis. While there are many causes, a common cause is an overabundance of certain minerals in the urine. The most common kidney stones are formed from calcium, but oxalate and uric acid also contribute to kidney stone formation. These minerals crystallize and bond to form kidney stones. Most people only experience symptoms when the kidney stones move through the ureters (tubes) which carry urine to the bladder. They can block the flow of urine from the kidneys, causing swelling and severe pain as stones move through the urinary tract.  Symptoms of kidney stones include pain in the stomach or side of the back, which may move to the groin area. Urine may be abnormal in color or contain blood and people can experience fever, chills, nausea or vomiting. In many cases, no treatment is necessary other than increased water consumption and pain medication. However, in severe cases, patients may need hospitalization.
