A Kindle is a hand-held, portable book reader. It allows the user to download and view Amazon EBooks and other material such as magazines, newspapers, and blogs. The first Kindle came out in November 2007 and the entire stock sold out in less than six hours. It featured a six-inch diagonal display screen in 4-level grayscale. Amazon subsequently released four other versions, Kindle 2, Kindle 2 International, Kindle DX, and Kindle DX International.

Kindle 2 improved the display and battery life, both issues in the original model. This model was available through the Amazon store in February 2009, and was almost immediately replaced with the Kindle 2 International version.

The latest versions, Kindle DX and Kindle DX International, are slimmer than other models and have a 9.7-inch diagonal display. Like the Kindle 2 International version, the Kindle DX International uses AT&T's network and functions in over a hundred countries. The DX models have an improved battery life of up to one week and automatically changes the text from portrait to landscape viewing if the device is turned on its side.

The Kindle is a wonderful device for avid readers who wish to read the latest novel but not have it cluttering their bookshelves.
