Laser hair removal is the common nomenclature for the use of a nonsurgical medical device that uses light energy to damage the hair follicle and prevent the growth of unwanted hair.

While 'laser' hair removal is common usage both lasers and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) devices may be used for the treatment. Laser hair removal treatments are common to medical spas and laser clinics.

Common treatment areas for females are the underarms, lower legs, and bikini line. For males, laser hair removal of the back is common although any part of the body can be treated.

During the laser treatment, the light energy super-heats the hair inside the follicle, damaging the follicle and cauterizing the capillary that feeds the follicle, effectively preventing it from growing hair. Multiple treatments are necessary as hair grows in different phases. Dark hair on light skin is the easiest to treat. Light hair on dark skin is effectively impossible to treat.

Due to the wide availiblity and demand for laser hair removal it is a common disscussion thread on physician and patient forums and blogs. Due to the high search volume, it's unfortunately the target of a growing number of splogs (spam blogs).
