Lead Management is a lot like a Secret Treasure Map: If you create it, maintain it, and follow it correctly, you have a much better chance of finding the gold (i.e. meeting your sales goals). The great thing about lead management is it tracks and creates the "map" for you. As you keep track of your leads, their dispositions, their likes and dislikes, you will make more sales. Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between good lead management and sales.

For example, what if you contact a lead and they tell you, "Can you call me back around the 17th of Never?" This is something you should probably track. You can place that lead in the "Do Not Call" category so that you don't bother them again. They are still in the system so you can run reports or stats off of them, but you will not make the mistake of accidentally calling them again. Or what if a lead yells at you and hangs up on you and you feel smaller than a malnourished sand flea? Also something you should log in your Lead Management. Or, if the lead says, "I'm very interested, but you'll have to speak up a little because I'm wearing a towel." You should definitely log that because that's just plain funny.
