The leadership in energy and environment design (LEED) is a third party certification program which is accepted internationally.

Only nine years into its existence LEED is the most well known green building rating system in the United States.

LEED
recognizes performance in five areas of human and environmental health for buildings to be certified and an additional two categories for homes.

Sustainable site development, water efficiency, energy efficient construction, material selection and indoor environmental quality with "location and linkages" and "awareness and education" being the additional categories for homes.

There are many reasons to get LEED certified including government incentives and gaining recognition for green building efforts.
