left behind
Left Behind is a popular book series of novels which all primarily deal with an event in biblical prophecy called The Rapture. The books have become a world wide phenomenon, selling well into the millions.
In this event, the entire world is plunged into a horrific, seven-year-long tribulation just prior to the end of the world, by a figure the Christian bible refers to as antichrist, and all Christian believers both dead and alive at the time are said to be "snatched up" into the air in order to escape the coming persecution. Those who aren't caught up in this event are "left behind," hence the series title.
On the Internet, there are a multitude of sites devoted to this topic. Among the most popular are Rapture Ready, and the Rapture Index, which gauges current world and political events on a scale to determine how close we might be to the rapture.
