After an extremely harsh public backlash over a Letter to the Editor in a local newspaper, the author wrote an apology: "I wish I had never gone and opened my big, fat, letter-writing pen."

His apology was generally accepted by most, as everyone knew exactly what he was talking about. The pen truly is mightier than the sword, and words and letters can cause ripples and effects that we may never originally intended them to have.

Letters are a nice way to get all your thoughts down on a piece of paper and get all your verbiage and lexicon correct before the thought is presented to an audience. Letters can often help mitigate any crippling awkwardness that sometimes comes with face-to-face communication. Especially if you have some bad news to convey.

Whether it's letters to the editor, written wills, letters to loved ones, or resume cover letters, it is so important that you carefully and vigilantly choose your words and express your ideas correctly. You never know when your words will come back to bite you.
