liberal
A political liberal generally promotes the ideals of personal freedom and equal rights under law.
Social liberalism is often concerned with counteracting economic inequality through government action. Liberal economists often advocate increased economic regulation, tax reform, and increased social services.
Of the millions who consider themselves liberals, of course, there is a wide range of belief and practice. Overall, however, liberals believe that steps must be taken to ensure freedom and equal opportunities for all members of a society, and that social change should be enacted into law in order to protect individual rights.
In the blogosphere, liberals generally oppose themselves to conservatives in political and cultural debates. Just as there are moderate liberals, so are there extremists; in the politically-charged climate of the online world, extreme opinions and pundits can sometimes drown out more moderate voices.
