libertarianism

Tag details

The Internet has long been a playground for politics, and libertarianism is a growing area of interest in that playground. Websites like Libertarian Logic and CATO provide discussion of a range of topics in the political arena, all from the standpoint of libertarianism.

From a general perspective, libertarianism is a philosophy that is well aligned with the principles that founded America, as embodied in the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. Ideals such as individual freedom, free enterprise, limited government, civil rights, and justice are hallmarks of libertarianism.

Libertarianism supports the idea that individuals have a natural right to make their own decisions about how they live their lives, so long as their actions don't unreasonably harm or interfere with others that have the same right. It suggests that matters of a private and commercial nature can be settled through voluntary contracts and the marketplace - government need only protect against force and fraud. It also supports the idea that government should serve limited functions such as providing roads, a monetary system, common defense and a system of justice - things that individuals either can't do or can't do as well as organized government.

  • Fearing Newt Gingrich

American Conservative News Politics & Opinion - The Land of the FreeAuthority Authority: 122
What do establishment Republicans and liberal Democrats have in common? They’ve long labored under a shared misconception: conservative candidates are unelectable. In 1980, conventional wisdom held that Ronald Reagan didn’t stand a chance against Jimmy Carter. The GOP leadership, the mainstream media and ...

  • Ron Paul - The Last and Only Hope for Liberty?

    Bastiat's CornerAuthority Authority: 95
You might be able to guess from my previous posts that I am a pretty ardent supporter of Ron Paul.  But I have heard some of my fellow supporters recently say that Dr. Paul is our last and only hope for liberty in the States.  I sincerely hope that anyone who says this means it as hyperbole to gin up additional ...

  • 5 Changes Libertarians Should Embrace After Yesterdays Anti-SOPA/PIPA Protests

United Liberty - Free Market - Individual Liberty - Limited GovernmentAuthority Authority: 593
Although many people of differing political persuasions were involved in yesterday’s anti-SOPA/PIPA protests, the overwhelming public response marked a coming of age moment for libertarianism. It looks as though libertarianism is an idea whose time has come. Americans are fed up with centralization of power in ...

  • Money influence politics? That’s unpossible!

    Cubik's RubeAuthority Authority: 415
This article got me a little agitated on Twitter yesterday. To recap what I was snarking about it at the time, Reason magazine seems to be asking: What’s so bad about billionaires spending money in politics? It just helps you freely decide what to think! I hate it when patronising liberals assume that voters are ...

We had some very good meetings. He’s off to visit the Acton Institute and the Mackinac ...

Here is the sequel to the video I posted yesterday . Every member of the Occupy Wall Street “movement” should watch this video and learn a little something about economics and the free market, which they despise. Same goes for all you liberals out there. This is how the real world works. Your good intentions are ...

. The full range of Ron Paul’s reeking extremism was exposed yesterday by The New Republic . Ron Paul has  recently suggested there was only a “total of about eight or ten sentences” of “bad stuff” in the newsletters that he regularly used to publish under his name. This assertion was patently ...

I hate it when people say the things I think or I know, before I get to say them. And that seems to happen all the time, when it comes to articles by Niall Ferguson. His latest at Newsweek takes on the idea of income inequality and the fundamental realities of why there is such a large apparent divide between rich ...

OK, liberals, you must watch this video. This video does a great job of explaining why the idea of government aid, i.e., welfare, ObamaCare, etc., is a bad idea as well as being morally wrong. Of course, the concept will be beyond the liberal mind to understand. But if we can get just one to comprehend …

  • Is Libertarianism Fundamentally about Competition? Or about Property?

    Contrary BrinAuthority Authority: 489
Some folks have heard me beat this drum. But it’s a fresh-enough thought - going to fundamentals that run deep beneath normal politics - so that I am moved to raise it yet again. Jeffrey Sachs wrote what bugs him about libertarianism.  Here’s one passage: Suppose a rich man has a surfeit of food and a poor man living next door is starving to death. The libertarian says that the government has no moral right or political claim to tax the rich person in order to save the poor person. ...

Libertarians do hold that the right to individual liberty across the board is the prime political value but by no means the prime value. First of all, I thought liberals were supposed to be grammatically correct, yet we have let them get away with ending their most highly touted campaign slogan of the past 4 years with a preposition.  I am not one to ride the grammatical high horse - its not a safe place for me to be - but I am shocked that no one ...

An excerpt from my latest at United Liberty : Republicans can’t win by insisting that Obama is an evil, radical socialist.
