The classic definition of libraries, as a collection of books available for public use has shifted since the explosion of the digital age. Information and knowledge management are now more likely to be held in databases and web portals than brick and mortar buildings. Access to information and the ability to cross reference facts from a reliable source has created a new set of rules for libraries.

For medical planning, the use of online medical dictionaries and national or international medical libraries allows the user access to world class information which can improve informed consent, strengthen preventative knowledge and allows the user to create an easy access path for information on health and wellness.

The Iowa State University Library hosts a blog called the Theoretical Librarian which discusses the challenges and triumphs of libraries in the modern age. The site is rich with information on timely issues, legal changes and academic challenges.
