lithium ion

Lithium ion, also referred to as Li-ion and sometimes the acronym LIB, is a type of rechargeable battery commonly used in laptop computers and other portable electronics.

It works by moving lithium ions from electrode to electrode (negative to positive electrode when discharging and the opposite when charging). For simplicity, the negative electrode might be called the anode while the positive electrode might be called the cathode.

Among other advantages, having one of the best energy to weight ratios, lithium ion batteries are popular for use in consumer electronics. Mistreated however, and used with some obsolete integrated circuits, conventional lithium ion batteries run the risk of explosion.
