local

Local is used to describe an event, an organization (local sports team) or an individual who resides or takes place within a specific community.

In the past few years, the local food movement has been making the news as a means to reduce environmental damage that is caused by hauling food long distances and as a way for people to purchase fresh food.

Local farmer’s markets and the 100 mile diet are examples of these activities.

The 100 mile diet involves purchasing Food that is produced or grown within a 100 mile radius of where the buyer lives.

Many communities have also developed shop local campaigns to encourage their residents to purchase goods and services that are sold through locally owned stores.

In tough economic times this strategy can help keep the money circulating in the local economy.
