look

To look and to see are activities as different as to hear and to listen. You can look at something, but not really pay attention to it because your mind is somewhere else, with a far different focus. You can look at the sunset, but not see it for all its beauty, with all of the purple, pink, orange, red, and yellow hues.


Look may also mean a type of expression. This could include a facial expression, dress, and body language. "I like that look," could refer to a style and manner of carrying oneself. Look also can be used as in, "Look, I meant to tell you this before..." In this case, look does not mean with the physical eyes, but more as an attention-getter. Here it is used almost interchangeably with "listen."

With all the varied meanings of look, what's an ESL (English as a second language) student to do? Look (for) could also be a search to try and find something, as in an address look up reverse search.
