Back in 1946, just a year after World War II ended, Lowe's was established by H. Carl Buchan in the North Carolina town of North Wilkesboro. Since then, Lowe's has become one of the largest hardware stores in the country.

Just 15 years later, Lowe's would go public, but it took until 1979 for its stock to ultimately trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol of "LOW." In the 1980s, Lowe's began to see, and continues to have, major competition from another do-it-yourself, home improvement store known as The Home Depot.

As of 2008, Lowe's had over 1,500 stores in all 50 states and Canada, with over 200,000 employees throughout North America.
