lycos
Headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts, a nearby suburb of Boston, Lycos is one of the original pioneers of the World Wide Web that continues to maintain a strong presence online.
What started as a search engine research project at Carnegie Mellon University in 1994 by Dr. Michael Loren Mauldin, has transformed itself over the years. After going through an IPO in 1996, Lycos Spanish Internet company Terra Networks worked to acquire the search engine at the top of the Internet bubble for over $5 billion dollars. After the bubble burst, a little over four years after its acquisition, Terra turned around and sold Lycos to Daum Communications, a Korean Internet company for just under $100 million dollars, a far cry from its initial investment. Soon after the acquisition, Lycos began its transition from search engine into a more multifaceted company.
Today, Lycos bills itself as a "comprehensive network of social media web sites that foster online communities and offers users "tools for video viewing and sharing, social networking, blogging, web publishing and hosting, online games, e-mail, and search."
