The Trifecta of FAIL; or, how to patch Rails 2.0 for Ruby 1.8.7 Thursday, August 7, 2008 It’s an oft-stated fact that most disasters result not from a single point of failure but from a combination of failures reinforcing each other.

Getting bash Completion Magic on OS X

    http://mult.ifario.us/ p/ getting-bash-completion-magic-on-os-x

One of the many nifty features of bash is that it provides context-sensitive completion, but for some reason this capability isn't part of the bash that ships with Mac OS X, at least as of 10.5.3, which is what I'm presently using.

Ruby 1.8.7 on MacPorts causing some problems 6 Posted by Robby Russell Fri, 20 Jun 2008 21:11:00 GMT It appears that MacPorts has upgraded to Ruby 1.8.7, which is good news if you’re running Rails 2.1… but if you have an older Rails application… it’s not going to work too well.

Ant bash completion on Mac OS X

    http://matthew.mceachen.us/ blog/ ant-bash-completion-on-mac-os-x-43.html

bash will do tab-completion for ant targets on Debian/Ubuntu boxes out-of-the-box. If you haven’t upgraded lately, you may need to: sudo apt-get install bash-completion On Mac OS X, it needs a bit of massaging.

    GSVideo and OSX

    http://codeanticode.wordpress.com/ 2008/ 04/ 20/ gsvideo-and-osx/

I was finally able to make gsvideo work on OSX (tested on Leopard with an 20″ iMac)! The problem was not as much as with gsvideo itself, which needed just some small changes in order to set the directory where GStreamer libraries get copied. The difficult part was to have GStreamer actually installed on OSX, for which I used MacPorts.

    Solving all your MacPorts problems

    http://breakthesystem.org/ 2008/ solving-all-your-macports-problems/

I just found the reason behind a bug in MacPorts that has been annoying the hell out of me the last few months: Sometimes, when installing new ports, the installation will die at the compilation stage with an error similar to this: -DNDEBUG -g -O3 -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -DWITH_APPINIT=1

MacPorts Under Mac OS X Leopard

    http://blog.securitymonks.com/ 2008/ 04/ 18/ macports-under-mac-os-x-leopard/

Put simply, MacPorts makes software installation easier under Mac OS X. As you may know by now, I prefer to compile from source important software packages, like those used to create the servers accessed by untrusted sources. That software should be customized to the operating system, environment, and requirements of the organization.
