Magazines are a type of publication published regularly, whether online, in print, or via some combination of the two. Magazines stay financially solvent by selling ads (whether banner ads, classified, or traditional print ads) and/or charging a subscription fee. Historically, most print magazines (i.e. Time Magazine) have featured advertising with the exception of Cook's Illustrated, Consumer Reports, (and off and on) Ms. Magazine, to help them retain greater editorial control over their publications. As a result, their higher subscription fees tended to reflect this.

The line between magazines and blogs is getting more blurry every day as more online magazines move from weekly (or less frequent) publication to adding both new and more interactive content daily on their websites. Technorati's Blogcritics Magazine is a good example of an online publication striking a healthy balance between stable content and useful interactivity.
