Mahjong (literally meaning "Sparrow" or "Hemp Bird" in Chinese) is a game that was originally invented in China and is usually played by four players. Some say it was invented by Confucius, but there is little concrete evidence for this. Mahjong is a game of skill, luck, and complexity that has gained popularity worldwide over the past few years.

The traditional Mahjong game is played with 152 tiles. Each tile has a Chinese symbol imprinted or engraved upon it. To begin the game, each player gets 13 tiles from the set and they each take turns drawing and discarding the tiles until they can create a "legal hand" by utilizing the fourteenth drawn tile to form four melds and a "head". Although this is the traditional method of playing Mahjong, there are many, many variations of the game depending on where you play it and by what rules you decide to play.

When playing Mahjong, it is well to remember the old saying, "The brave bird makes the cat fat." Remember to play the game relatively conservatively (especially when first learning the game), and you will avoid many of the mistakes and pitfalls made by overly risky Mahjong players.
