Making money refers to the range of business strategies one can apply to earn an income.

Although broader in scope, the phrase is typically used to refer to legitimate techniques, such as working for an employer, opening a personal business or freelancing. In our day and age, there is a distinction between working offline and working online, where online jobs refer mainly to web marketing, which is the promotion and selling of products and services over the Internet.

Given the relatively harsh competition for exposure in the online medium, making money online is no easy feat. There are a number of Internet marketing strategies that web marketers can use to keep their businesses afloat. One of the most widespread processes is search engine optimization (SEO), which aims to increase a website's visibility in search engines, through natural (unpaid) search results. As a general rule, the higher ranked a website is in search engines' results pages, the more visitors and potential customers it will attract.

Display advertising refers to the use of attention-grabbing banners on an affiliate website to drive traffic to a company's website. The purpose of this strategy is either to direct potential clients to a purchase form or to simply increase product awareness.

Social media marketing is a rapidly expanding internet marketing method that focuses on garnering awareness about a product and increasing traffic to a website through social media websites. Some companies may use it in conjunction with email marketing, which involves emailing promotional messages to a group of people who have agreed to be contacted by the marketer.

Web marketing is associated with a series of business models, such as e-commerce and affiliate marketing. E-commerce (or electronic commerce) refers primarily to the purchase and sale of products over the Internet, but can entail the entire online process of developing, marketing, selling, and delivering goods and services.

Affiliate marketing is the practice by which a company rewards affiliates for each customer or visitor brought to a website through the marketer's efforts alone. This business model makes use of four core players, namely the merchant, the network of incentive offers for affiliates to choose from, the publisher and the customer.
