The term manufacturing is used to describe a very wide range of human activities and the segment of the blogosphere tagged "manufacturing" reflects this great variety.

Manufacturing usually refers to a process of creating finished physical or tangible product from raw materials or products of the previous manufacturing stages. Manufacturing is often associated with metalworking and engineering, and the automotive industry is an excellent example of that, but metals are by far not the only type of materials used in manufacturing. Plastics and semiconductors are examples of newer types of materials used in manufacturing today.

As a resource and energy consuming activity manufacturing requires great degree of management. Over the course of the last two centuries since the Industrial Revolution several scientific management theories have sprung up, many of which are now widely accepted across the entire range of the manufacturing industries.

Manufacturing is a great source of wealth and a very important contributor to the infrastructure and national defense in any modern society. Since manufacturing businesses are also among the major employers, manufacturing has also become a social and political phenomenon.

You can find manufacturing talked about at sites like Metalworking Forums and ShopFloor.
