mapquest
MapQuest started in 1967 as the mapping division of R.R. Donnelley & Sons in Chicago, putting free maps in gas stations. They were pioneers in computerized mapping, running Trip Tik for AAA starting in 1993. In 1994 they broke with their parent corporation to form GeoSystems Global Corporation. In February of 1994, MapQuest.com was launched. GeoSystems Global changed its name to MapQuest in 1999 and went public. In 2000, AOL bought MapQuest and has held it until the present time (April 2011).
MapQuest provides mapping services at MapQuest.com, including airport and international maps, and city and state maps. MapQuest also provides route planning, traffic reports including bike routes, gas prices, and an atlas. They have both a Twitter and a Facebook presence, MapQuest's sitemap provides a list of various services offered.
The MapQuest corporate blog did several posts on the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, showing the effects of the disaster. At Rewriting Life, Kaleigh Somers uses MapQuest information as the center of her post contemplating a “walk for love” across the United States. The Daily Crowdsource blog credits MapQuest with being a pioneer of the crowdsourcing movement. The Recumbent Bike shared information in November, 2010 about how to use MapQuest API in biking blogs to help other bikers blog routes.
