marie antoinette

Tag details

Marie Antoinette was the Austrian-born queen of France's Louis XVI about whom many romantic legends have grown since she died on the guillotine on October 16, 1793.

Bloggers can be reviewing books about her. Or they may be reviewing the Sofia Coppola film Marie Antoinette, or presenting their own re-imaginings of the famous queen.

She's still, even today, being used as a metaphor for bloated excess, while admirers lament the loss of objects associated with her.

But don't be too sympathetic, for she's answering back with a blog of her own.

Design Team Member Laura Carson has generously created a tutorial for her “How’s My Hair” Accordion Fold Mini Book (which is adorably tiny and really funny). • Marie Antoinette painted by Boze

    Madame GuillotineAuthority Authority: 417
Marie Antoinette painted by Joseph Boze. This rather unflattering and flat faced portrait was commissioned by her husband Louis XVI in December 1784 to the tune of 2,400 livres, which is peanuts compared to the 18,000 livres that Madame Vigée-Lebrun received for her painting of the Queen with her children. Filed ...

  • Marie Antoinette in a super fashionable redingote gown

    Madame GuillotineAuthority Authority: 417
A beautiful drawing of Marie Antoinette from around 1780. It is not known who drew this portrait but it was sent as a present from Axel de Fersen to his beloved sister Sophie. A redingote, as worn here by the Queen was a very popular style of dress in the 1780s – the name comes from the English ‘riding coat’, ...

A beautiful painting by Nikklas Lafrensen le Jeune of the fête given by Marie Antoinette at the Petit Trianon on Monday, 21st June 1784 in honour of Gustave III, King of Sweden. I adore the graceful way that the guests stroll around the illuminated Temple of Love. This painting was part of Gustave’s private ...

  • "Villainous" Marie-Antoinette?

Mr. Harvey of Royal World aptly expresses the disgust many admirers of Marie-Antoinette feel as the late queen is once more publicly degraded . The cartoons in question, which I will not have on this blog, are insulting to Mr. and Mrs. Obama and to Louis and Antoinette. Neither couple resembles each other in any ...

You don’t have to look far to work out where Marie Antoinette got her taste for informality and a cosy, intimate ‘normal’ family life, that the snobs of Versailles disapproved of so thoroughly. A charming miniature of Marie Antoinette with Madame Royale and Louis-Charles, painted in early 1790 by François Dumont.
