market research

Every year billions of dollars are poured into market research by companies that are trying to figure out what you, the consumer, are thinking.

If you buy a product, chances are there is going to be a survey in the box. The company wants you to fill it out and return it to them. This helps them understand why you bought the product, how your buying experience was, etc. If you purchase something at the store, there may be a phone number printed on the receipt asking you to call and rank your experience.

Another method of market research is a focus group. A focus group is a lot like a survey, only it is done in a live setting. A group of random people are brought together with a moderator who asks questions. The discussion is recorded and the group is asked about their feelings about certain products, services, and companies. This information is then used by the company to make decisions about where they are going to go strategically.

When companies are at their head-scratchingest, they look to market research for everything from automotive market research to people's belief systems to product roll outs.
