The field of marketing encompasses all communications that reach out to the customer from a business perspective. TV commercials, newspaper and magazine ads, radio spots, press releases, skywriting, smoke signals--if a company is using it to send a message to the world at large or any part of it, it's marketing.

Because marketing is so critical to reaching consumers, it has become an intrinsic element of the business world. Marketing through older media such as television and print has increasingly been supplanted by marketing in the new media of the internet. Online marketing, with or without the assistance of a marketing expert, has become part of the endless constant dialogue between those creating content and those consuming it, encompassing blogs, search engines, and corporate marketing sites.

Structured marketing efforts that reward buying behavior include such programs as a loyalty program or rewards program.

In marketing, a loyalty or rewards card, also called a points card is a plastic or paper card, that the card holder presents when making purchases to gather "points".

Today, the most effective marketing utilizes subversive strategies that attempt to lure consumers with attractive content. Viral marketing tactics involve the consumer in the marketing process through interactive games and storylines that take major media properties beyond the creator/audience relationship. As consumers become increasingly comfortable in an online environment, these strategies will move from leading-edge exceptions to the commonly-embraced norm.
