martial arts

Most people's understanding of martial arts is limited to the Karate Kid movies and an occasional Bruce Lee marathon weekend on Cable TV. If you ask the average person what martial arts is, they will tell you it's one person beating another person until the loser is a mere husk of the person they once were. This is unfortunate. There is so much more to this little understood art of self defense.

If you look beyond the hitting and punching, you will find that martial arts is a whole new world of self defense. It is about honor, respect, esteem, reverence, tradition, and values. It is a way of life. It is a set of principles. It is a belief system.

Martial arts is a world where Fate wears a Hakama and carries a Bokken. It is a world where you do not attack unless you are attacked. It is a world where a system of combat fighting arts and codified practices are used to protect oneself and one's family. Strength, movement, motor skill mastery, stamina, flexibility, etc. are all accomplished via the practice of this ancient art.
