Marvel, one of two major comic book publishers was started in 1939 by Founder Martin Goodman. The original name of the company was Timely Comics.

Timely's first publication was Marvel Comics #1, part of the Marvel Mystery Comics series, which featured Namor the Sub Mariner and the Human Torch, heroes, although evolved, still active in the Marvel Universe today.

In the 1950s, Timely changed its name to Atlas Comics and at the time switched genres often, producing war stories, horror books, Westerns, romance comics and more.

The 1960's was when the Marvel Universe was finally created starting with The Fantastic Four #1. Today the Marvel Universe has worked its way into the world of pop culture, making Spiderman as recognizable as Mickey Mouse worldwide.

On New Years Eve 2009, The Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel Entertainment for over $4 billion.

Marvel comic books today are read by and traded between men and women of all ages.
