Marvel Comics is the popular appellation for Marvel Worldwide Inc, a comic book publisher created in 1939 as “Timely Publications.” Marvel and its rival DC are the “Big Two,” comprising the vast majority of the comic book industry. The modern Marvel Comics is best known for the creations of Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko and others: The Fantastic Four, Spiderman, X-Men, Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, which have all been adapted into movie franchises in the past ten years along with other well known heroes such as Captain America and Thor. The superhero team of the Marvel Universe is called The Avengers, and a major motion picture adaptation is currently being filmed by writer/director Joss Whedon for release in 2012. Marvel Comic characters are also the centerpiece for the superhero land at Universal Studios Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida. Marvel was purchased by the Walt Disney Company in 2009.
