Mattresses are thick pads placed on a bed frame or another flat surface to sleep on. Sometimes matttress pads are placed on top which can help to protect the sleeper from allergens and irritants.

There are five main types of mattresses: innerspring (the most popular), foam, air, water, and latex.

Innerspring mattresses contain coils that determine the firmness and quality of the bed. To improve the comfort of some innerspring mattresses, a memory foam mattress pad can be placed on top under bed linens.

Foam mattresses, particularly memory foam, are made from a material developed by NASA that conforms to your shape for comfort.

Air mattresses are mostly used for house guests, traveling, or on campsites. They are filled with air by mouth or with an air pump. Water mattresses were popular in the 70s for their unique comfort. Latex mattresses are similar to memory foam, but do not conform to the body.
