Ann Landers once wrote to a reader, "Keep in mind that the true measure of an individual is how he treats a person who can do him absolutely no good." Thought provoking words, to be sure; however, fortunately, with most things in the world, there are better, more precise ways to measure them. Measuring technologies just keep getting better and more and more precise.

From the measuring tape you buy at the hardware store to the scale you weigh yourself on to the thermometer with which you check the temperature, man has always looked for ways to measure and quantify his surroundings and environment.

How tall are you? What size of shirt do you wear? What size of tires do you need for your car? How many square feet is your house? How big is your lot? What time is it? How much flour should you put in that cake? How long is this shoelace? How tall is that mountain? Everything can be measured.

As time goes on, measurement technology just keeps getting better and better. More specific. More precise. More certain. And so, too, does our understanding of the world around us.
