Medicare Supplemental Insurance, or Medigap as it is often called, is a private health insurance with the purpose of supplementing original Medicare coverage. The Government offers Medicare insurance to all US citizens after they turn 65, but this often doesn’t cover all the needs that people have. There are 10 different Medigap options that you can choose from, and through a little simple reading and research you can start learning more about them and decide which is best for you. Not all options are available in each state.

Each standardized Medicare Supplemental Insurance plan has identical benefits from state to state, but policy rates will vary significantly depending on which provider you shop with. Be cautious that you are not fooled when shopping for insurance; the benefits of package A are the same as all other package A benefits offered nationwide, no matter what a salesman will charge you for it. CNN Money has some great information on benefits and price points.

There is a lot of confusion about Medicare Supplemental Insurance and the benefits received from purchasing it, so take some time to shop around and do a little research about your options.
