A mite is a small arthropod that is related to the tick and belongs to the subclass Acari. Mites form one of the most diverse and successful groups of invertebrates. They are highly adaptable and can survive in a wide range of habitats. Due to their very small size, mites will usually go unnoticed. While many species of mites live in ponds or in soil, some are parasitic to plants, animals and humans.

Demodex is a genus of such mites that live near the hair follicles of mammals. There are currently 65 known species of Demodex, with 2 species having been identified on humans and sometimes refers to as eyelash mites. Because they are so tiny, they don't usually cause any symptoms, although some skin conditions can be worsened by a mite infestation.

It is estimated that about one third of children, half of adults and two-thirds of all elderly people carry mites, although an accurate number is impossible to determine.
