Mobile devices are any one of a number of portable machines that can connect to the cellular telephone network to send and receive data. Most commonly this means cellular telephones, but increasingly it also includes smart phones, computers and other handheld devices which are data-ready. These devices are distinguished by their small size, portability, and connectivity.

The evolution of the mobile device began with the invention of “Third Generation” or “3G” wireless coverage. This sort of mobile phone network permitted more information to be moved more quickly and over greater distances than ever before, and it is what triggered the “Smart Phone Revolution.” The ability to stream data at such a rate so as to permit listening to music or browsing the web was enough to make mobile devices practical replacements for most portable computers, allowing for increased connectivity on the go.

It is hoped that with the development of the fourth generation of wireless connectivity that increasing speeds will be achieved, with the ultimate goal of doing away with physical internet connections entirely. In the meantime, inexpensive mobile devices enable almost everyone to send and receive phone calls and text messages, to the point where basic communications are no longer done using a computer or standard telephone.
