molluscum
Molluscum contagiosum is a very contagious condition caused by a pox virus of the Moluscipox virus genus. In adults, Molluscum contagiosum is usually acquired sexually. The Molluscum infection is found worldwide but especially in warm, humid climates. A weakened immune system makes a person more vulnerable. Many adults with HIV, and other immunodeficient diseases, also have Molluscum.
Molluscum starts as tiny painless bumps. Over several weeks, they become larger, swell and turn red with a distinguishing small crater in the center of each bump. They can become itchy. Whether you have molluscum or you have a child with the condition, it is advisable to start treatment and to adhere to strict hygiene measures for the duration. Safe sex should also be practiced in the case of adults where molluscum occurs in the genital area.
