Monitoring is defined as the act of observing something. Often, monitoring also involves the recording of the information or subject that is being monitored.

Electronic fetal monitoring, for example, involves the use of external and internal devices that monitor and record the fetal heart rate.

Therapeutic drug monitoring involves practitioners monitoring drug and medication levels in a patients blood.

Home security monitoring involves the use of equipment to, often digitally, monitor a home to keep it safe from intruders.

Other forms of monitoring include computer network monitoring, website monitoring and biological monitoring.
