Montreal is the largest city in the province of Quebec and the second largest in the country of Canada. The city was originally named Ville-Marie, meaning “City of Mary.” The current name, Montreal, comes from the three-headed hill in the center of the city called “Mont-Royal.”
The official language of Montreal is French. Over 3.5 million people call the Greater Montreal Metropolitan area home as of the 2006 Census. Winters are cold and snowy in Montreal with an average temperature of −14.7 °C (6 °F). Summers produce much precipitation with an average temperature of 26.2 °C (79 °F).
