Montreal is the largest city in the province of Quebec and the second largest in the country of Canada. The city was originally named Ville-Marie, meaning “City of Mary.” The current name, Montreal, comes from the three-headed hill in the center of the city called “Mont-Royal.”

The official language of Montreal is French. Over 3.5 million people call the Greater Montreal Metropolitan area home as of the 2006 Census.
