A meal ready-to-eat (MRE) is just as the name describes — food that requires very little to no preparation before consumption. Some MREs may be heated before being eaten, but this is not a necessary step. The military uses the MRE as their current standard operational ration. MREs are also popular with hikers, backpackers, campers, and survivalists who seek lightweight, no-mess solutions, and do not wish to cook on the trail or in the woods.

An MRE makes for a good addition to any emergency food storage program, most especially because it stores for 10 plus years (dependent upon storage temperature). Those storing food for emergencies often have the MRE partnering with dehydrated food and freeze dried food.

There are 24 types of MRE entrees to choose from. Their packaging is compact, flexible, and generic-looking. The process by which an MRE is prepared is cooking the contents and inserting them into a pouch, which is then sealed shut.
