national
A nation can mean many things, and so can the notion of "national." It invokes a sense of patriotism and of place and history, culture and language, community and heritage.
A national feeling is often called upon in times of great crises or challenges. For example, the financial crises and ensuing deepening recession in the United States in 2008 brought many to discuss the national mood, national reaction, and national sense of self. And the blogosphere certainly plays a continuing role in updating and defining what national means in various contexts, such as "national nightmares" , "national suicides", and such.
Nationalism is closely related to the term national, and it too conveys a sense of strong emotion and ties to a geographic place, often a country or territorial homeland. Nationalism can fuel acts of violence and civil war – such as in Northern Ireland and Gaza – due to longstanding disputes over control of territory
National can also be used in much more friendly situations, such as Major League Baseball's National Leauge, and national pastimes, such as (once again) baseball in the United States.
