navigation
Humans have been navigating the globe for over 3000 years. The ancient Greeks relied heavily on star mapping for guiding themselves, and each civilization from the ancient times up until the 1890s has similarly used celestial navigation. In 1891, for the first time, information was able to be transmitted wirelessly, laying the groundwork for remote communication.
Sixty years later, the first satellites out-preformed celestial bodies by electronically communicating their positions instead of relying on visual cues. Cloud cover ceased being a problem. Even with clear skies, navigation was only calculable when stars were visible; at night. More modern technology simplifies the process by using automated GPS tracking devices, which calculate a location for the traveller by measuring its own position relative to overhead satellites. Where the old system of navigation used to use the earth as the stationary object in their calculations, the modern system uses the artificial celestial bodies as their point of reference.
