nfl
The NFL, known in long form as the National Football League, first came into existence a little over 50 years after football was first played in the United States.
In 1920, eleven teams came together to organize the sport once and for all, hoping to eliminate the many problems football seemed to have, including "dramatically rising salaries; players continually jumping from one team to another following the highest offer; and the use of college players still enrolled in school (which was replaced by having an annual draft." Over the course of the next few decades, the NFL faced competition (the AAFC, AFL, USFL, and WFL chief amongst them with the first two merging with the NFL, the last two being defeated by the NFL in short order), but has continued to grow to the billion-dollar industry it is today.
The NFL culminates its season with the Super Bowl to determine the league's champion. The Super Bowl is routinely watched by millions of viewers in the United States and the world.
