niche marketing

Niche marketing is a form of promotion to a small segment of a larger market.

When marketing online, it is taught that the deeper you go in a niche, the more likely you will tap into exactly what the potential customer wants and the quicker you can see results.

As an example, a niche may be "dog training" and if you go deeper in the niche you might find a "terrier dog training" market.

Online, a niche might be a simple phrase that someone types into a search engine. So, when someone types "Kerry Blue terrier dog training" it is somewhat evident what the person's problem is, and a niche marketer can setup a web site to solve the problem.

A niche can be a geographic location as well. For example, people looking for "police clearances" online could be a niche. "Michigan police clearances" would be a tighter niche, and "Detroit, Michigan police clearances" would be even tighter. Geo-targeting tools assist in allowing a marketer to cater to all geographic markets with one web page (or site) by displaying ads or messages relevant to the visitors geographic location.

Niche marketing tools can help marketers find a keyword (or niche market), the amount of traffic to expect if achieving the number one spot in a search engine for that particular keyword, and what competition needs to beat out to attain the number one spot.
